Free technical stuff
- Good source of downloads that don't give you adware:
http://www.Download.com
- Great free malware and spyware hunters: Spybot, Malwarebytes - both
can be had from the first web site mentioned above.
- Good firewall - improvement over the Windows built in firewall -
Zonealarm. Zonealarm firewall is better than
the built in Windows firewall because it catches outgoing as well as incoming connections.
If malware gets installed somehow, it will make an outgoing
connection that will not be blocked by the Windows firewall.

- Free program that provides in depth technical information about your
hardware and software:
SIW - scroll to
the bottom where it says "Old SIW 2010 (build 0714) - Freeware Version"
to find the link for the free version.
- Good web site/html editor - go to SourceForge.net
and search for Kompozer.
- Excellent email package: Thunderbird - go to
http://mozilla.com
- Browsers: Opera.com, Google (search for Chrome)
- Free application suites: Word processing, spreadsheet,
presentation, database (largely comnpatible with Microsoft Office):
- Record your computer screen while you narrate what your doing - make
an instruction video to demonstrate how to do something and share it
with friends/family.
- Jing - limited to 5
minutes, but integrated with ScreenCast.com which allows you to host
your videos.
- Remote control, file sharing, web conferencing - see and/or control
someone else's computer or share yours. Communicate with chat or
just call them!
- Virtual private networking. This is pretty technical, but you
basically create a secure connection to remote computers in your own
little private network. The advantage is that it acts like a local
network, which makes it easier to share files, folders, printers.
- LogMeIn has a product called
Hiamachi
which is wonderful.
